Palatal and Lingual Arches

Palatal and Lingual arches restrict tipping of teeth to which they are attached. They are able to increase anchorage value significantly. They should be constructed from inflexible wire (at least 0.9mm) and soldered to bands rather than being removable, because their ability to supplement anchorage depends upon rigidity.

Nance Arch

A stabilising wire transverses the palate extending forward to the first bicuspid area. The wire is soldered to bands on the first molars, with an acrylic button processed over the wire in front of the palatal vault, which prevents the arch wire becoming buried in the palatal mucosa if the teeth do tend to tip.

This provides stabilisation to the arch and prevents mesial movements of molars during transitions.

Transpalatal Arch

The transpalatal arch is usually made with a 0.9mm stainless steel wire and is attached to the molar bands by soldering. The arch transverses the palate and incorporates a loop for expansion or contraction as necessary. The arch is usually designed with the loop pointing distally so that it will not impinge on the palate if mesial tipping of the molars occurs.

Quadhelix Appliance

The quadhelix can be used in a number of situations including the correction of molar rotations, but most commonly arch expansion. It should ideally be constructed from 0.9mm stainless steel wire then soldered to bands on the first molars. The lateral arms can be contoured to the bicuspids and cuspids. The arch incorporates four helixs which provide the flexibility needed. A removable version of the quadhelix can be supplied fitted into palatal horizontal sheaths soldered to the bands; this can then be activated out of the mouth.

Pendulum Appliance

A fixed/removable device.

The pendulum appliance exerts a light continuous distalising pressure to the upper first molars using springs formed from 0.8mm TMA wire. Each spring consists of a helix loop with a molar arm. A mid line expansion screw can be incorporated into this appliance. The pendulum is anchored to the upper teeth using either wire rests bonded to the occlusal surfaces of the bicuspids, or Adams Cribs on the bicuspids.
